I have seen some work here - couple years back - where the actual face mold was made. You can also use plastic masks. For hands, fill latex or nitrile gloves - I have done both of those - masks and gloves - much fun!!!

wannadanc, "Poppy" brings back memories. Was this when we were all running to the party store for tiki stuff for molds and masks? My sister in New York still has my 5 foot tall skinny tiki with candle holder on top of his head. She uses it so much, the wax that drips down looks like hair. Billie

LOL - you got it, girl!!!!!!! My tiki faces survived, but not everything did. I was using that blasted quick setting stuff - and the ruination set in about 6 months later.

Gosh, you guys are bringing back memories. I still have those party tiki masks for molds. Still have a couple of tiki gods lurking in my yard. Hi to both of you. Maybe this forum will revitalize the way it used to be then :)

(((KLINGER))) HI there!!!! I have been in a cave so long I was beginning to think about putting hypertufa and flat marbles on the walls!!!! It really WAS so much fun, back when, and I would like to rediscover that passion in myself!!!

I made a plaster mold of my face. It's something I would never want to do again. I cut an oval out of a box that sat around my face..NOT much below the chin. I smeared my face with an extremely heavy layer of vaseline. I used bic pens with the ball/ink chamber removed. I wrapped the ends with gauze. These were my breathing tubes. I was afraid straws might collapse from the weight of the plaster. Make sure and coat your eyes, lashes and brows extremely well and ask the person assisting you to put the box on your face as you lie down and then carefully put the plaster on your face. It was a little freaky and I felt a little panic stricken for a few moments. Remember to keep a pleasant expression on your face...you are capturing this moment! The plaster got quite hot. After it set up we removed it. I lost some eye lashes in the process and my eyes lids were sore. There may be a better method than I used.

Not sure this would work well for a concrete relief mold tho...as the concrete is so porous and it would not capture the finer details of the mold. (Never put concrete directly on your face as it will burn you.) I pressed clay into my mask and then glazed and fired it. If you google "death mask" you will find additional DIY instructions. I got a perfect mask from this technique..but like I said....I sure wouldn't do it again!

A friend that is quite an accomplished artist made a pop mold of her face; forgot to cover her eye brows and lashes and removed every last hair when she removed the pop. lol She tells this story on herself; and now covers her eyes and brows to avoid that alien look

Concrete and liquid plaster will both burn skin. If you want to make a plaster mold, use the plaster-embedded gauze that doctors use to make casts for broken arms -- it's thin enough not to burn.

The danger is not a little skin burn, it's massive trauma!
