Yes this is my first attempt at a grot. I have made one other tufa item and that item was a pedestle for a gazing ball.

This tufa stuff is a lot of fun and the people on this forum are creatively gifted.

Thanks kobold. They did harder and are living comfortably in my garden. I'm leaving them out for the winter to see what happens to them. I made six grots, all with holes in the middle so I can stack them as a totem pole in the spring...if they survive.

Your grots are really nice. Did you or are you soaking them in a water bath? That will make your tufa projects last much longer, else they will crumble in due time. When I first started this craft, I didn't know about the bath part and a I have a couple leaves that are crumbling around the edges.
Where are you from in Iowa, I moved here in 78 from Iowa, I was born in Dubuque, and I lived in the Quad cities for 5 years befor I moved here.

Louisiana greetings, I didn't soak them in a container of water but did soak them down every evening with my hose for almost three weeks. Does that count as soaking and keep my grots intact?

I'm in Northern Iowa around the Storm Lake area. Moved here from Cincinnati, Ohio almost ten years ago. I'm always freezing so living this far north is too cold for me. I'm looking to move somewhere south or southwest in two years.
