stuff I should have known...

OK,hands up those of you who have been at this for a while and just realised that you don't know as much as you think?I see a few hands go up,and I'll tell my story first.

It's about fibers(or,fibres,eh?).I'd always added them to the dry mix, rubbing them between my fingers to separate them,but not really doing the job.Left little lumps of them in the mix.I use Harbourite,BTW.

Anyhow,When talking to the nice lady who'll be selling me GLASS fibers,she said that you just add the glass ones to the liquid,and they disperse evenly and quickly.

So,today,I had a "what if?"moment and added my current fibers to the liquid I use.Shazam!The fibers immediately broke up,dispersed throughout the liquid.No more rubbing them or even talking nice to them.Fibers,do your stuff!

I tried that once and the fibers formed "hairballs" in the liquid and made strange lumps in the concrete. You must have a special talent!

Nah.I imagine it works differently for different fibres.These are VERY short and fine,thinner than a human hair,but recommended by my concrete supplier.Can'yt wait for the glass ones-no furry parts!

Hope the censors don't throw me off for this one, but did you guys ever try dur-o-fibar by dur-o-wall? Use it all the time and never had a problem with hair balls, lumps, bumps and other assorted nuisances. It's 1/2" chopped, alkali resistent fiberglass. Get them at the masonry supplier. If something comes out too hairy, just blow torch off the ends. Also, not too expensive for polite society.

Tried a lttle experiment today.Clear glass container and water.First,I added fibres that are about 3/4 of an inch long,and mixed.The fibres initially dispersed,but,as I watched,they all floated to the surface.Tried the same experiment with Harborite fibres.When I mixed them,they dispersed throughout the water and stayed in suspension.So,despite previous threads by me to the contrary,it seems to me that mixing the fibres in your liquid first makes more sense.Just ensure that you mix them in,don't just dump them,or they do appear to stay in clumps.The glass ones,as I understand it,work the same way.
