My first leaf casting project!

I finally finished my first leaf casting! I actually sold it already. I thank everyone who writes in to the forum as it has helped me greatly.

VERY cool! First one huh? Looks pretty professional to me! Is that an elephant ear leaf or rhubarb? Did you make it into a birdbath bowl shape?

Kudos on selling it too! My goodness! That could be a sign of good things to come for you.

Oh my gosh! Another instant success!

I've been hanging around here for awhile now and I still don't have anything worth posting a picture and here's another hot newbie with great leaves! You make me ache.

Sorry. Just venting there a little... I'm better now.

Great job, Flowersmakemesmile. Its sad when I hope to get as good as a first-timer.

Thanks again, everyone! I share this with you because it is the people who write in that gave me the idea and the help. I used the 3:1 ratio of sand:portland. I used fiberglass tape to help reinforce. The leaves are false rhubarb or colt's foot.

    Flowers,

Welcome. I have been tufaing for years and still haven't tried a leaf casting, seems intimidating to me. I guess I'm just a wimp. Yours is beautiful.

Good Job!! Thats what you need to do is just jump in and do it.
I found an outlet for my leaves. A Hosta Farm. Hope to take some this weekend.

Fabulous and I am hoping you are hooked!!!
Spying your neighbors leaves, stooping to tie your shoes at the botanical gardens with plastic bag in hand, and even turning the veggies at the market all in quest of the next leaf!!!
So much fun to be had.
    Very nice leaf.

Yes, Dena, everything I look at now I wonder "what would that be like cast in cement?" It is sooo addicting. I am going to try zucchini leaves maybe this weekend. I think they could be kinda cool. I did use a smaller leaf, a basswood leaf and it worked great. I figure I can stick them in amoungst the plants and let them collect water.

What a great first project. I just casted my first leaves on Thursday. I still have to paint them. Does anyone have anything to recommend for painting?

    Deenap,
I used watered down acrylic craft paints. I also had the cement wet as I used the "wash" of craft paint. I did a layer of green, then black, then brown. If I didn't like what I saw, I wiped it off. As it dries, it softens. Experiment and have fun with it. I think it's important to get over the intimidation of it all and dive in. If you don't like it in the end, you can always paint over it.

Thanks again for all the nice comments. It is sooo much fun. Now I have a problem. I made this to be used as a birdbath. It leaks slowly. I used a concrete sealer when I was done. Any ideas? I am currently doing a search about it and found out about beeswax. Can it be used over the top of the concrete sealer?
