Often, in retail, one has to sell at a price others will buy regardless of profit. But if the purpose is to make a profit, consider a "full-cost" formula. In the picture framing trade we used this kind of model in my shop.

Consider costs separately: materials, waste, equipment, space, transportation, sales, and PROFIT. Have an idea of what profit you need to make this worth your effort and that the fun is your bonus. Remember, what you aren't doing while you manufacture and sell has a value too.

A typical small manufacturing waste factor is 20%.

Of course, for many of us, profit is the last factor. But if you need it, put it first or don't waste your time.

Many folks forget that the trip to Lowes consumed time and money (gas, mileage). And the fatigue on Saturday afternoon after the farmer's market may mean you are giving up some time another day of the week to do the laundry.

Personally, I plan to give away most of what I make other than for my own use. I'd rather give it to a friend than find I paid a stranger to haul it off. (Which is what one ends up doing if costs are not fully covered.) The other side of that coin is that one of those strangers may turn out to be a best friend next year because we met and shared an interest.

In re-reading this I come across as a bit negative and that is not my true attitude. But in my picture framing business I found myself in competition with folks who did not charge enough. This cost me sales and put every one of those folks out of business eventually.

And I can see myself doing this with little regard to profit simply to introduce the technique and try to drum up co-mudder buddies.
