Vermiculite mix - information needed

Hi there,

I believe that this is the first question that I have really posted to the forums. I have answered many so hopefully you all can come through for me with some much needed information.

I am looking to hear experiences with mixing lightweight concrete in a concrete style mixer. The mix is 50 lbs portland cement to 4 cubic feet of fine grade vermiculite. I am aware that a paddle style mortar mixer is the most suitable mixer and as such it is the only kind I have ever used for a mix like this. That being said I am faced with a situation where a drum style concrete mixer may be my only option to mix 5 yards worth of concrete.

I want to know who has tried mixing vermiculite in a barrell mixer - was there any success to be found? Did you mix a very dry mix or a very wet mix - and more importantly how did the various methods you tried work in terms of the finished product?

Is there anyone out there who regularly uses a concrete mixer for vermiculite based mixes? I hear that it can be done, but I would like some first hand knowledge from those who have tried.

Thank you.
