Hypertufa on Styrofoam

Hello! I've been lurking for a while, but finally have to speak up to ask for help! I'm a Halloween nut and have made many foam tombstones and the like in the past, but have decided I'd like to try my hand at Hypertufa this year. The info on the tombstones I found here was great! I'm also thinking about making cemetary gates out of some discarded sytrofoam coolers (used in medication delivery) by stacking the coolers 4 high to make 2'x 2'x 6' pillars. I'd like to coat them with hypertufa to make them look like stone. The question I have is what do I need to do to the syrofoam to get the 'tufa to stick? Do I need to put hardware cloth on them or just rough up the foam? Thanks!!!
