to stain,or not to stain..

I'd like a discussion on acid stains and others.Has anyone used wood stains with good effect,i.e.lasting a good long while?I've used a diluted muriatic acid to change the appearance of a piece(thanks,Tango),but not to colour.Doing spheres and faces,I've used either latex paint(exterior),or acrylics(like Patio Paints),or coloured powders added to the mix.

Because my products or so thin,I'm concerned(perhaps incorrectly so)that acid use would weaken the shell I've created.I do use a weak vinegar solution prior to painting to clean up the surface,but not to colour a piece.

Anyhow,discussions anyone?I know that Tango has posted his excellent guide,but I'd like to hear from others who have already experimented and found good or bad results.

I have no clue but I am glad you asked. Because I couldn't find any "stains" for cement just the color additives of powder or liquid. I did look at the wood stains with a wondering eye of whether they would work or not and variations in colors.. I was looking for colors more along the reds, blues, yellows and greens. Which I didn't see. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.
Could you explain the acid stains a little bit?

Sherwin Williams carries concrete stains and well as sealers.
They have limited colors available or according to their website they will also tint them. The goods news is Aug 3-7 they are having a sale 25% off.

Rick, I use wood stain for highlighting the veining in imprinted leaves and other designs. I paint the imprint then give it a light sanding to remove the stain from the high spots. For overall staining I use Smith Paints in Harrisburg, PA. They sell 4 oz bottles of concrete paint, stain and dye stain. Billie

Rick, I haven't used any acid stains, but have used lots of wood and concrete stains. I have used wood stains on stepping stones which have been outside for several years, they still look pretty good. I do seal them though. I also use concrete stains and again seal them.
I have used lots of house paint, and patio paints, haven't used the modern masters metallics and would like to though.
I have also used pigments in my mixes. So many choices.

You were trying to find the Plastikote in the US?? I went to their website, clicked on North America, clicked on the United States, clicked on Industrial/Hardware. Under the primer/sealer column clicked on polyurethene. A box should come up to put in your zip code and it should tell where in your area to purchase the sealer.
