VERY thin concrete!

Yesterday,I mixed up a batch of practice concrete.I used white portland,silica flour in a ratio of 1:1,added a tiny amount of plasticizer,and some silica fume.My main purpose was to see how smooth it would come out.

Well,damn smooth,even shiny.but,the more interesting thing was how thin the mix got.I'd smeared the mix along the sides of the bowl I was using .This morning,24 hours after the pour,I was able to take a piece of this mix on the wall and hold it up to the light,and see the light thru it!It was eggshell thin and very brittle,but there was enough structure to hold it together.So,increasing the thickness bodes well for thinwalled fountains.

Anyway,interesting.And,it stayed mostly white,as I'm only using about 8% by weight of the silica fume.

    This sounds interesting! Does the fact it was brittle in your first test mean you will change the recipe or will putting on slightly more of the product make it work for your fountain ideas? Sometime I want to try a fountain - sort of a big bowl to catch water from some of my leaves mounted above it. Obviously this would get pretty big and all our experimentation with lighter weight but strong and winterproof and waterproof hypertufa and concrete recipes will eventually lead to the perfect answer..

    I think wafering(concrete/mesh/concrete)is the answer.the components of the concrete will vary according to the recipe used(there's gotta be a lot out there that would be applicable);I'm going to try this mix,using 100%admix/fortifier.The thickness will be determined after the first coatings.

    Rick, I make hypertufa lamp bases and immediately thought if your recipe was transparent and strong enough you could make lampshades. I've got silica fume and white portland now just to find some silica flour. Keep us posted. Billie
    p.s. two days of migraine this past week and woke up this morning to remember I've still got your package in my truck. sorry will get to the post office.

    Billie Ann-I'll try this same mix,subbing glass aggregate instead of flour.Glass isn't sharp so don't know if structual capability is there.I'll let you know results next week.And,get better,hear those migraines are a B----H!

    OK, so first thing, did anyone do any more playing with this recipe? If so, what were your results?

    And...OT, can broken glass be smoothed by putting it into a kids rock polishing tumbler with some sand? Since the tumbler is just sitting in a corner, I'm eyeballing it for my own custom glass aggregate...

    Thin crete is cool.
    I made 6 different colored 'neat' admix enhanced slurries drizzled them on top of a sheet of the 18" wide handwrap. I put another sheet of handiwrap on top and rolled it less than 1/8 inch thick with a rolling pin. A nice thin slab about 14x16
    I waited a hour removed the top handiwrap and used an old dog brush to press a gazilion tiny holes in the thin sheet.

    The colors aren't all that great but it is amazing never the less. The bottom is so shiny it looks like glass and the pinholes look terrific at night, I just wish they were more random. I plan to make more of these this winter.
    I'm cutting up this sheet and using them like windows in a 16 inch perlite lamp ball I'm working on. I plan to hang it with an old chain light I removed from a broken swag lamp.
    It is all perlite so very light.

    Sure you can tumble glass but if you want it to stay shiny you might need polishing grit.
    I tumble my glass in my cement mixer with powdered silica sand. My neighbor thinks I'm nuts but I can do a lot of glass at once.
