The Eliptical vases are done in a sand casting method there is no mold. I am holding tight to the specific how toos, on this one. This is only the second item that I can think of that I have not shared either in pictures on webshots or discussion here.
The face itself is from a mold that can be purchased through Dick Blick Art. The thin plastic masks come in a package of 6 each a different ethnicity. The casting of the face was done first and used like a tile or bobble in the sand casting process.
If you have not done much sand casting it really is a wonderful process and fun to boot.

Hi Garden C
One way would be to make the back in a sand depression covered in plastic.
Then cover that with plastic and mound very damp sand on top of the piece to creat the hollow and shape the front.
Now roll the plastic back so the edges of the back piece are visible. Make these good and wide so they will be strong.
Mold the front on top of this using a concrete adhesive on the edges of the back piece so it adheres well.
Cover with plastic and let cure.
When done you can pour out the sand and there you have it, a sand casted vase in any odd shape you wish.
