Japanese Garden Lanterns

I found this link on making Japanese garden lanterns out of concrete:

Japanese Garden Lanterns

I found the illustration with the component list (base, pedestal, platform, firebox, roof and finial) helpful, as well as the pics of molds.

I love this lantern!

    Cool!
    Great design. I love lanterns.
I'm working on a three tier (maybe 4 :)lantern using round balls as light boxes.
I'm using a ten inch, twelve inch, and fourteen inch plastic light globes to cast each light box in two pieces.
that is the easy part. the windows will also be round with concrete grills to match.
I might even add an eight incher to the top.
I could actually add a 6 inch as well.:)
I'm working on the design for the base right now and the roofs between balls. I want something that looks organic for the roof, like bamboo. The 4 legged base will be tricky, I can't afford for this to fail and I want it to have legs.
My balls will be cryogenic perlite so weight won't be an issue.
If I get this done it will be BIG.
    Over 5 feet high.
It's one of my winter projects.
If anyone is interested you can email me and I'll sent you a few work in progress pictures.

Well, HULLO!!!JB, that is a cool looking lantern. Hey, maybe you could make the mold using a plastic coffee container, and use a torch to burn it off........;) Nah, I seem to remember that doesn't work.......But I will be watching YOU to see if you make one of those!!!!!! (Great Big Smile!!)

IT IS OUR HERB'S WORK from Victoria, BC!

From time to time somebody discovers his work, his tutorials. Now he is working (mostly?) with tufa. He made many-many different lanterns, all are beautiful. Check out older postings and the Gallery too. He is a great photographer.

Thanks for the link to Herb. He does do nice photos.
Got any tutorials on really big mirror frames?!! LOL!

Very cool lantern, looks similar to one I made a while back.

As usual, your lanterns leave me jealous! I want to try some next year, hopefully I will be moved by then. Is that round pot with the mugo (sp?) pine made by you, too? I love that. Your whole arrangement is great! Thanks for sharing! Nice to see you again. BB

BB - Alas, no. The round pot is a commercially-made, concrete one that we bought somewhere, many years ago. It's very heavy, even though the sides are no more than an inch thick.

I've sometimes wondered if it has any reinforcment inside the casting, but there's no sign of it on the surfaces, and since, as you can see, the outside finish is exposed aggregate, I think the presence of the aggregate in the mix, combined with the fact that the casting is only an inch thick, would make it difficult to include reinforcement. Hi Herb
We have those planters all over even in z3. they are tough and most are made by the outfit listed below.
I've been planning to visit them for months to see how they make these suckers. I was told they are pressure casted.

Here is a link that might be useful: Tough concrete planters

tufaenough - thanks for that link. I think they also come in much bigger sizes than the one that our little Mugho Pine is in, and I could use one or two more. I'm not surprised if they're cast under pressure - they're very precise and the insides of the containers are quite smooth - all first rate quality. Herb
