2 ?s about curing and waterproofing

I've notice several posts that talk about not leaving your leaves out for winter because of cracks. I'd like to leave my birdbath out all year if possible. Is there a trick? If I douse it well in waterproofing stuff, will that help it survive? Right now I have my first leaves curing in a water bath, since I saw a post that said that helps. There is this funny flaky white stuff settling to the bottom of the pan and on the leaves. Are you supposed to change the water or something? Oh yes, Im in NC in zone 7 where we usually have below freezing temps but usually not below 25, and nearly always above freezing during the day, if that makes a diff
