hypertufa over terra cotta

I have two large terracotta Italian style planters flanking my front door but just noticed that the terracotta is starting to crumble from the moisture (and maybe freeze thaw cycles). I quite love these pots and would not be able to afford replacements. So my question is whether I could put a layer of hypertufa over the pots to reinforce them. . . . I thought maybe I could attach chicken wire or a finer wire mesh around the planters and then a 1/2 - 1 inch layer of hypertufa.

Thanks for any advice.
