Rules for dumpster diving?

I see some windows in a dumpster that someone took out of their house as they're renovating. I try to pick a few up here and there in hopes of making a greenhouse someday. Well, do you just go take them or should you knock on the door? I usually pick things up at a curbside or off the sidewalk since it's public property, but if a dumpster is sitting in the front yard and part of the sidewalk, is it proper to ask for permission to take the windows? I don't want to get shot over a window or two! LOL And you never know what kind of people they'll be.

I would knock on the door and ask if it's ok. I've done it before, and the people have always been very nice about it. Who knows, if you get to talking with the person, they just might have some other things that you are interested in!

That's what I was thinking, knock on the door. Now I just need to see if I can talk my hubby into getting it for me out of there since I'm 8 months pregnant! LOL I hate to see old windows taken away to a landfill!!!! Ugh.

Thanks for your response. :)

A fellow in my area got into trouble with the police. If you go dumpster diving behind or around a store it's private property. He was getting some good stuff. But he had to stop.

Why don't you put a wanted post on freecyle in your area, or the wanted section on Craigs list? Freecycle is great!!
I wonder if it's okay to go to the recycle bins to get plastic jugs, all of you have me hooked on WS.
