By any chance, do you know the real name of this plant? I ask because there a few different plants that go by this common name.

i believe it is a Pachira aquatica

Cutting off one branch or piece of any plant (unless it's the trunk!) shouldn't harm any kind of plant or tree, though it very well may encourage new growth on the same stem unless you cut it right back to the ground (and even then it might do something, but it's very unlikely with a Pachira).
