how to repot large ficus?

We have a large ficus tree that is probably about 17-18 years old. We have repotted it a couple tiimes, the last time being about 4 years ago at least. It is currently about 10 feet tall and is completely root-bound in a pot which has an inner diameter of about 20-21 inches.

What size pot should we go up to for this repotting? Sghould we just use potting soil? The roots have grown out the bottom of the old pot. Should we just cut these and then slice the roots vertically on the outer edge of the rootball to get new growth? Is fall an OK time to do this, as we live in CT? The plant never goes outside as it is too big to fit through the door.

Any other tips/precautions we should take?

Thanks

Dave
