Wicker Bicycle Planter

17 years ago

I love to visit a local Garden Shop where they have a bamboo bicycle on display. I have really tried to figure out how I could recreate that bike on my budget (which currently is zero). Two years ago I had bought 6 place mats made of wicker braiding at the 99 cent store. They didn't have "the look" I had hoped for on my rectangular table so they got adiosed into the dark obiss of 'closet world'. Storm comes along and blows my geranium planted Tandum Bicycle planter down spilling (and killing) the flowers. I knew it was time to reuse, restore, recycle, redo, repaint, (you know the drill).

Placemats

Wrap the bike

Steal Fishing Basket From the Bathroom Decor. Redo interior with my handpainted burlap that is Poly coated.

{{gwi:150143}}

Repair old magazine holder and weave in matching Wicker. Hubs made a back fender with wood to support the basket. I painted butterflys on both bike seats.

{{gwi:150146}}

Paint all exposed areas to match. Poly entire piece.

Now I just have to plant it.

    Hey there Amazing Woman, the things you can come up with are really something. Tho that basket with the handpainted burlap would never be outside at my house. That is gorgeous. But what a wonderful bike you created.

    hugs, Karen

    I agree with Leveta! You ARE a genius! Surely a woman of most creative means! Love the way the bike turned out...awesome!

    Remember "necessity is the mother of invention". That is especially true at my house. Thank God for Freecycle and Craigslist and the 99 cent store. I grab on to an idea and I just cant let it go until I have found an affordable version. I would actually go to town to visit that bamboo bike. The lady of the store would say, "Can I help you"? I'd just answer, "I came in here to breath". Secretly I was telling the bike, "I've got my mind set on you"! Ya'll listen to this song about tenacity.

    Oh WOW! I love your bike! I am going to come to your house and visit your bike! LOL It is great. I don't have a bicycle built for two but I have my son's old bike waiting for me to get around to it. Now you have inspired me to find the rest of the components to make it just right. Now if I can just find the time.

    What a beauty!! Did you glue the wicker on the bike?

    I love it!

  • 17 years ago

    That is very creative. What is that you are putting on it? Minwax what? Is it going to protect it from the elements?

  • 17 years ago

    Whoa, susieroses! That is a great lookin' bike! Great recycling ... luv the baskets & built on basket holder with the leather belt! Hope it lasts for many seasons with the poly finish! Cool ideas! Hubs & you make a great team! Jeanne S. Are you going to plant it? This may be a "silk flower" moment! :-)

    I spread GE Exterior Silicone II on the bike bars and wrapped them with the wicker. I used large clamps to hold the wicker in place until the silicone dried (This was not an easy or fast process). I used a whole can of Minwax Polyurethan on the wicker, straw, wood, willow, bamboo, handle bars and seats. The wicker soaks up the Poly and it acts as an extra glue and hardener. I plan to do extra coats periodically. I even coated the burlap fabric with the Poly. I am not a confident gardener about what to plant in the baskets. Temperatures are already gettin' up to 100. It will probably need to be potted plants. This Fall, I plan to fill the back basket with coconut liner then those miniature pumpkin gourds that I am growing in the back yard. Last year people were using my bike as a photo op on Halloween night. I had painted it with spray primer to look like rust and It had yellow pansies in it.

    WOW WOW WOW!!! That project abso-posilutely takes the cake AND prizes for creativity, perseverance, patience, and I agree you should be on TV but you should have your own garden junk show!

    The bike is wonderful! Maybe you could find a plastic bin that fits in the basket to protect it from the dripping plants. I can see it decorated for several seasons.
