Ficus with problems

Hello,

I bought a ficus benjamina two and a half weeks ago from a well-known flower/plant market. It is about 4.5 feet tall and currently in a plastic pot.

I have read some of the other threads about ficuses - my worry is that my plant seems to have a lot of problems!

First, it drops leaves - some shrivelled and brown, a lot green, a few yellow. It also has some black patches on the leaves.Other leaves seem to have holes/tears in them, which have discoloured (brown) round the edge. Still other leaves have what appears as a cut in them. Is this all likely to be some kind of pest?

I have been watering it regularly - perhaps too often having read more about it, so I'm watering less now. I have also been misting every few days. The ficus is situated in my main room - it gets light, but not direct sunlight. The temperature in the room does change because it is heated during the day and not at night.

If it was just the leaf loss I would assume it was temp fluctuation, but the other problems make me wonder...

Any ideas would be much appreciated, as I have a bad track record with plants and really want to keep this one alive and kicking!

Thanks in advance

Ellie
