Hi Lori..I usually root Philos in water, but Philos can be rooted via soil or water.
If rooted in water, I'd use plastic to increase humidity. Toni

The trouble I always have with rooting in soil is that I try to put too many cuttings into the same gigantic pot, which since they don't have roots to take up the water yet means that they always just drown and rot and die (usually in that order). Which is what I get for trying to root 18 cuttings in a 10-inch pot.

If, however, you're willing to stick to reasonable proportions (3 cuttings in a 3-inch pot, or 4-5 in a 4-inch pot), soil should be as easy as water.

I am wanting to stick the cuttings in the original pot so I can fill it out. I think I may give it a try and root some in water for good measure.

Pothos root very easily in water at any time of the year. I've never tried rooting them in soil, but would still give you these tips:
1.) Wait to root in Spring unless you have the warmth and humidity they will need to root now.
2.) Ensure that you have at least one node on the cutting and make the cut below a node.(new roots will grow from this node)
3.) Place the cutting in the (moist)soil with the node buried beneath the soil
4.) Keep the soil moist like a wrung out sponge, although at this time of year you should keep a little less moist. As Toni said, you can place a large plastic Ziploc baggie over the cutting to increase humidity.
5.) Make sure it gets adequate light, no direct sun.
