Measuring Light Intensity

With temperatures dropping I've had to move all but two of my plants in from outdoors. I have room with a south facing window suitable for my plants. My apartment is pretty small and this is the only room I can put them in. I have two locations in the same room: A 4 foot by 2 foot table in front of the window and a plant stand against a wall directly behind the window.

I'd like to measure the light intensity at varying distances from the window, but do not have a photometer or the money to spend on one. What I do have is a digital camera. I've read that you can use a digital camera and white sheet of paper to indirectly measure light intensity. Does anyone have experience doing this? I'd like to set my plants up in a proper arrangement to minimize burning and maximize vitality during the winter.

How does anyone else measure light intensity, even if it's a qualitative estimate?
