Too many apples!

I have a golden delicious apple tree in my patio which is more important as a shade tree than to provide fruit. But it wants to provide fruit by the bushel. It's made so much fruit this year I have had to support all the branches. It hasn't increased its size much, putting all its energy, I guess, into fruit production.

I cut off flowers and young fruits by the hundreds but apparently this wasn't enough. Flowers were in whorls of ten or fifteen blossoms.

When is the best time to thin fruit (flowers) to reduce production. I know you can spray the tree with somethihg to prevent any fruit, but some would be nice.
