Toro Height Adjustment help

16 years ago

I called Toro and they have no clue what I am talking about so I thought I give it a try here.

I have Toro Personal Pace 22in Recycler. In the manual, these are given as the possible height adjustments one can make in the mower:

1inch;

1-3/8inches;

1-3/4inches;

2-1/8inches;

2-1/2inches;

2-7/8inches;

3-1/4inches;

3-5/8inches;

and 4inches.

But the mower has only five height adjustments on each of the wheels. I figured them out to be 1inch, 1-3/4inches, 2-1/2inches, 3-1/4inches and 4inches.

What if I wanted to mow at 2-1/8inch? How can I achieve this?

    Not sure if I'm following you...

    The height selector levers have a hole that indexes a tab at each position, right? Well, the selector lever can also fit BETWEEN the tabs.

    saxman1!!!

    That works ingeniously... Thanks! =]

    Same thing that tomplum said, just expanded a bit, but thanks anyway!

    Just out of shear curiosity, why would anyone be worried about cutting their grass sp precisely anyway?

  • 16 years ago

    Oh yea, tomplum said the same thing. I guess when he said 'arm', it kinda threw me off. I grasped onto 'lever' more quickly. But thanks tomplum! =]

    evdpgh, my grass cannot handle high heights. This is because the sod was probably laid on a soil filled with huge rocks. I encounter resistance 3inchs down in almost 8/10 places. The only places where the flathead penetrates easily is near the edges and this is where grass grows nicely. Grass does fine when mowed at 2-1/2 but I think it can do better at 2-1/8. =)

    Next time lower the rear 1 notch below the front and compare the quality of cut.

    tomplum,

    That is interesting! I noticed the rear being higher than the front when they are both set at the same height. I figured it was to prevent scalping when one pivots/moves backward during turning. However, I get the feeling this still happens to a small degree when turning. hmm =/

    I think for the summer I will cut at 2-7/8. So I should set the back to 2-1/2?

    Usually the front should be slightly lower then the rear.

    metal, yah, that is why tomplum was saying to lower the rear to make the deck more even.

    tomplum, can you talk a little more about this? As in why it is like this in the beginning? It's benefits, etc? I am kinda wary about it but I shall try it.

    WPM's and riders both have historically been pitched to the front. In the early days, it was a way to get a more complete cut w/ the horsepower they had. Remember the days of 4 and 5 HP riders? A whole other topic. I've had those w/ super recyclers pitch the deck rearward that had thick lawns with good results. Especially those that left the lawn higher. Give it a try and if it helps finish your cut bit- great! If it worsens the cut, it's 10 seconds to set it back. Multiblade decks normally still play by the pitched forward rule due to other factors involving quality of cut.

    Thanks tomplum, I will keep you updated the next time I cut. :)

    My 22" Toro FWD mower deck is higher in the rear than the front when I set all four wheels to 2-2 1/2" settings. Shouldn't the deck be level or is it sloped this way on purpose?
