root ball

Previous owner of this house left behind two sickening blueberry plants, he said when he ourchased the plants from a nursery, they looked great and healthy, but it was declining since day one. I dug them up the other day, and it was so easy, the entire root ball was intact (in cylender shape as if newly removed from a plastic container.) With a small garden fork, I gently poked thru the root ball, suddenly a huge amount of soil falled apart. Amazingly the soil was dead dry, this even after recent prolonged soaking rain in our Eastern Atlantic region. After a closer look, I suspect that the outer root ball must have kept the moist from getting under the root system for the entire last year. This makes me think that a common way of removing the plant from the plastic container, sit the plant on top of the digged hole, trying carefully not to disturb the root ball, may not be the best way to plant a well groomed plants from a nursery, at least not for blueberry plants, but I think this is the case as well for other kind of plants.
