Old Shutters

While looking at some blog pics from the South of France I noticed that they really had a way of 'making do'! They used old shutters to block the sun instead of expensive awnings.

I used gate hinges from Goodwill $3.00 to attach my shutter over my back porch window to add color, shade from setting sun, and that Southern France charm.

I love that! Thanks for sharing.
(PS Your porch looks just like mine at the beach. What is to the right of the door? I can almost picture bay-like windows, because that's what I have.)

    Thank you nancyjean!!!!!

This is the back porch so it is less than lovely right now.

To the right of the door the structure jets out to accommodate the laundry room. Hubs built a closet Potting shed on the exterior.

Another great idea! Your brain must be like a whirlpool...never still and always coming up with changing ideas!

Wonderful. Wish I could get my DH on board with everything. BTW...I covet that screen door.

Thank ya'll for your kind comments. Hubs and I do not go out much. We make these projects our hobbies.

Nancyjean, That screen door cost us $10.00 at a resale. It had never been painted, just a little dirty. Sometimes when I am washing, sanding, priming, and painting, I wonder if it is worth it. Then I realize that no one on Earth would sell a red screen door. It's CUSTOM. LOL

I love this idea. I got some closet shutter doors with the intention of making "something wonderful". I had the idea of having window boxes outside, and using the shutters across the front of them. Or,since my kitchen window looks straight into the laundry room, shortening them for shutters to cover that window.....well, you get the idea! Too many ideas, not brave enough to start cutting it to pieces yet :) I bought small shutters, too,so many great ideas for them (check out Robolady's site for all the ideas)but no shutter has been touched yet.

Kudzu - I loved Robolady's Site!!!!!!!! It makes me want to go out to the garage and start digging.

Window boxes are charmingly beautiful!!!! Hubs covered some with lattice at my old house. Shutters would be great window boxes too. Shutters that are really old with tons of built-up lead paint (like those in New Orleans) are easier to cut. Some of the modern shutters were built cheaply and are bad about falling apart if you cut them. I would use some glue in the slats closest to the cut.

    Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

Love the awning/shutters. I made something a few years ago that I thought someone here might like. I made a valance for my living room curtains from old shutters. My camera battery isn't charged right now for me to take a better picture, but here is an old one. The shutters were hinged when I got them. I cut a couple of pieces of 1 x 6" boards to fit on each end of the shutters and screwed some hangers on the back.

I love the shutter idea for the sun shade.. Was it a door shutter type?

I still want to make a potting shed with an old outhouse look complete with the moon in the door....and I happen to see one the other day on some website.
