Sleep Apnea

I am starting a new thread from pidge's 'Movie Season' thread because this life-threatening medical condition is so serious and many people that have it are unaware.

I absolutely DESPISE wearing the CPAP unit but it has made such a difference in the quality of my life I wouldn't consider not sleeping with the unit on.

Below I have put a link that explains sleep apnea.

I will follow with a link about CPAP.

Here is a link on CPAP.

I tried about 4-5 different styles of masks before I found the one most comfortable for me.

This really isn't a funny story but it also is: my friend with sleep apnea was continually having her CPAP contraption chewed up by her dog. She went to all kinds of lengths to get the dog to stop because it's expensive and also she needs it every night. Alas, nothing ever worked, but she did keep us entertained at lunch with the latest canine escapade. Now back to the show in progress. This really is an important health issue.

My DH had sleep apnea and the CPAP has helped him a lot. (Our dog has no interest in the machine, thank goodness.)

A friend of mine recently had a breakdown of his machine and was truly distraught by the loss of it - the disruption to his health and comfort was intense, he's been using the CPAP for a number of years now and believes it's saved his life. Luckily they got it fixed in about three days. He's not an older person by the way.

Pidge, presumably your friend has a bedroom without a door.

Wanda, I'm truly sorry you have something which makes your life less than fully enjoyed. How did you get "used" to the equipment?

My mom was diagnosed and no matter what we try, she won't take measures to alleviate it. She also has asthma and allergies, so breathing is not something she does particularly well anyhow. She does take her meds for those and a nasal spray. Any tips for getting her to "fix it" are greatly appeciated!

Wanda, thanks for the information. I have to admit I knew very little about sleep apnea until just recently. I never dreamed so many people had this. Today in the Philly paper was a full page ad telling people to throw away their CPAP unit and try some new product. Thanks to you I knew what they were talking about. You really have my sympathy.

My son has just been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea
and has a CPAP machine. He says he can sure tell the
difference. My sister has Asthma and also Sleep Apnea
she's like you Wanda, that CPAP goes every where she goes.
I don't think she would be alive today if it weren't for
her CPAP, I think she stopped breathing over a hundred
and fifty times when they were doing the sleep study.

Robin I surely hope that your mom will get the help she needs.

So sorry I went AWOL concerning this thread.
Three very horrific events in my world in seven days.

    Robin,
Sorry to hear about your Mom.
To be perfectly honest, I'm still not 'used' to wearing the CPAP.
I still hate it but can't imagine sleeping without it.
There are still nights when I wake up and sling the mask halfway across the room.
I have tried every mask they make.
I think that most of it is 'mind over matter.'
You just have to be determined.
Once your Mom realizes how much better she feels, hopefully, she will make up her mind to do it.

When you first start wearing CPAP, the wind pressure takes your breath.
Depending on how severe your apnea is, the air pressure is varied.
It's like a wind tunnel forced up your nose.
After a couple of weeks, I didn't even 'feel' the wind.
I would have to check to make sure the machine was on.

Have your Mom email me if you think it would help.
Maybe I can give her some suggestions that have worked for me.
