Bacon. Apple. Pie.

Seriously! I have one in the oven right now. I found this recipe (scroll down) while web surfing the other night and my imagination went wild. I did the suggested variant of substituting a sharp cheddar crumble topping instead of a top crust and adding a few cranks of black pepper. I even used apple-wood smoked bacon.

This next hour will be excruciating. I'm anticipating 100% yum! I'll post pics and give the committee a full report. I just want you all to contemplate the possibilities of Bacon Apple Pie with Sharp Cheddar Crumble Topping until I get back. :o)

It's the snow and cold that makes one try new and different recipes, at least im ny case. Keep us posted. Sounds like a good combination. After a little snow bound nap I will be heading to the kitchen to start cooking and baking up a storm to conteract the snow storm outside.

The dark stuff on top is cheddar... the bacony goodness is buried within. It's cooling right now... though I'm finding it hard to wait to cut it...

Your original post, the picture of your pie and the recipe from the link is going to force me to make this! It sounds absolutely divine! We eat very little bacon -- except for the ocasional BLT in the summer and when I make "Suzanne's Green Bean Bundles". This will give me another good excuse. THANK YOU!

I gained a pound just looking at that baby! I can't wait to hear how it tastes.

Well? When are we going to hear how good the pie is?

Er, sorry there... I seem to have slipped in a bacon-apple coma. The pie was about 95% yum. I'm glad I cooked the bacon to partly-crispy rather than "slightly floppy" as the instructions called for. I'm not a fan of flacid bacon, and it would not have crisped further whilst bubbling away in the apple-y goodness.

Steve and Izzy impatiently circled the table while it cooled and finally Steve solemnly announced "I'm going to cut it. Would you like a piece?" "Umm, yeah! The thought had occurred to me, seeing how I went to so much trouble to make it and all!"

It was goooood. The flavors went really well together. I think I'm going to try again and do a regular top-crust, Grade B maple syrup instead of sugar, and a splash of bourbon. Deep down, I don't think I'm a cheddar-with-apple kind of gal. That's kind of an east coast thing, isn't it?

While I was typing, Steve got up from his nap and dished out another 1/8th of the pie... I better keep up.

Oh that looks great! I think I just gained a pound or two looking at it also.

If I lived near you, a bit more of that pie would be GONE. It looks really good. I don't if cheese and apples are an East Coast thing or just a matter of personal taste. I'm an East Coaster and the combo is not my fave. I like pears with brie and apples with peanut butter. Wish I had either one right now.

Looking at your pie, which is gorgeous by the way,I'm wondering what a bacon, cheese, apple quiche would taste like? It could be pretty good if done right.

Boy, that looks delicious. I love bacon and I love cheese and I love apples. Eating cheese and fruit is common in Europe and people here on the west coast eat it too.

    I like Marda's idea of a quiche...

I think I'll make this and simply increase my lipitor dosage:)
