ID this phal please

I just bought this no ID phal from Lowes about 2 weeks ago. It was on clearance for $5 and the best part was that there were 2 plants in the pot. Only one was still in flower. All the other orchids had tags that gave their hybrid name, but this one didn't. It's from Costa Farms. I sent them an e-mail and the photo. They responded and said they would send my photo to the orchid house for an ID, but that was a week ago. I haven't heard anything yet.

Can anyone ID it for me?

Thanks,

Indiana.Matt

Eventhough I am a newbie to orchids, I got to know this. It is impossible to ID the unknown Phalaenopsis you have. This is because there are so many hybrids around and there are so many similar flowers and growth.

Lately, growers get flask(seed grown or meristem propagated) from Taiwan, for example, that has only labeled "Phal", and no other information. Even from a flask of a known variety, there are many variations (seed grown or mericlone). You see, mericlones are supposed to be identical to the parent. But out of this flask, there are some variations.

You see you have already the two different looking Phals out of this one pot that presumably came out of a same flask.

So, Matt, I think you have to accept the fact that you'd better love this Phal even though it is nameless and you can not enter orchid shows to compete.

    Dash,

I have discovered this fact about no ID Phals and was just hoping that because all the other orchids that Lowes had from Costa Farms were named that this one would have a name as well. I will love it even though I may find it is nameless, but I'm still going to hang on to the hope that is has a name, at least for a few weeks. I also hope that if it is nameless, Costa Farms will at least e-mail me back to tell me that it's nameless.

Oh, and I don't know if the second plant is different or if it's the same as the one in flower. The second was not in flower when I found it. So it might be a surprise. I hope it is different, but if not, I might try planting them together again one day. Maybe after they are ready for repotting.

Both plants are on the medium to large size, both were crammed into a 3" pot with moss and no drainage, both had half of there roots rotted away. I cut out all the rotted roots and repotted them in there own pots of bark mix. They are forming new roots and the one without the flower is growing a new leaf.

Maybe after I get the hang of these things, I'll spend a little extra on a good named orchid to enter in a show.

    Thanks for your input,

I will be absolutely astounded if there is any AOS rule which says that you cannot enter an unnamed orchid in an orchid show.

Sure you cannot get an AOS Award with a NOID, but as far as i know you could win Champion Orchid of a Show with a NOID. That said, i have never seen a NOID achieve that exalted position here.

    Matt,

Perfect attitude, practice on the Big Box store/NOID phals and then look at spending a few more $ once you are pretty sure you can keep them going. You learn much more from the mistakes than the successes IMO, and the mistakes hurt less when it wasn't a big $ plant.

Of course we probably all have NOID's that are special to us, I have 1 or 2 that 'thrill' me as much as any high $ species or hybrid I own.

Yes you're right Art. You can enter a no ID in a show.
Matt there is no way to tell what the name of that plant is unless they have the info @ Costa Farms. My guess is that THEY are so huge, this could be a multiple choice answer from them. gb

On occasion, Matthew, people have sometimes found a tag buried in the pot. Look for it when you repot the plant.

@ginnibug: It took a while for Costa Farms to e-mail me the first time, so I still have hope that they will come through with an answer eventually.

@cjwatson: I repotted them as soon as I got home. There was no chance they would survive if I didn't. No tag.

@everyone: Thanks for your input! I have 4 Phals now and they are all doing well, but one did get a little sun burn, I promptly moved it out of the sun.

Well, I was passed around to a few departments at Costa Farms...I really thought I was going to get some where with finding a name for my no ID, but in the end, no one got back with me about it. The initial person I e-mailed was very kind and helpful and talked as if they could come up with a name.

arthurm: Could this be Dtps. Hsinying Maki 'Shot Gun'?

    Thanks,
