Vanda Root Question. :-)

Sorry. This is a weird one!

One of the cats chewed off an eight inch chunk of Vanda root. For the heck of it I placed it in water to see what may happen. It has formed an off-shoot root that's about four inches long.

Question: Will this root system eventually form leaves or am I just entertaining myself?

Thanks!

    Hi
IME New plants have only formed as offsets from the main stem. But what have you got to lose ?? Be sure and tell us what happens!! gary

Hi Gary. Thanks for the reply. I had *serious* doubts about this but on the other hand ...the crazy root IS growing! Letcha know.

Did you get your Lace Plant to bloom?

    Hi
By "lace plant" assume (Aponogeton madagascarensis) My fav aquatic plant.lol Not only did I get it to flower it actually produced viable seed Parent plant climbed out of the water at 33 inches. Survived 3 complete dormancies .
tank developed an unfixable leak plants went to outdoor marsh garden where they were frozen by this freaky winter lol. Not so bad as it proved impossible to control algae on the leaves in any of my ponds. Was beautiful while it lasted though!!!
Might mention about your Vanda that I have a strap leaf as well as a terete /strap cross that have roots hanging into the water of a pond in the shadehouse . Went out and checked them lots of new root growth both above and below water but no new plants?? gary

So the Aponogeton madascarensis needed a dormant period. I bet you were justifiably proud when it flowered and produced viable seeds! And 33 inches above the water too! Holy Kamolee! 8-)

Sounds like there's potential with the new root formation on your plant. One of those ~time will tell~.

    Hi
All the aponogeton family need dormant periods . The debate is always at what temps and how long and does it need to dry With the lace plant I found with an acid pH
heavy water movement and curiously underplanted with Cryptocorynes I could get vigorous regrowth after 3 months during winter without drying. But it sure hated my 90 dgree summers as you would suspect.
Have seen pix of wild specimens 5 feet tall with 20 inch wide leaves .!!
I mentioned the Vanda hanging into the water because the roots reached the water about 3 years ago . I figured the roots would abort but they didn't even tolerate a coating of velvet algae?? Roots have grown as well in the water as above but never a sign of forming a new plant.. Would suspect that if it was going to happen 3 years would be long enough?? But then again,Last two years have been very cold and long duration and this year my heating system croaked in Nov lol. All have survived but no flowers and slow growth of course.
I've read of water culturing vanda but have never tried it . Many people say it works well. gary

I'd like to make a trip to see those wild 5 ft. tall plants in person! LOL! :-)

The Vanda root mass above the water may be what is allowing the submerged roots to survive this long. Three years is a loooong time to ~wait~ for leaves though and still no sign. :-/

I have about 1/2 inch of primary root above water and the new growth began above water ... coursed along in a horizontal manner for about 4-5 inches and is now turning down toward the water container. I think I'll *entertain* myself with the pet root for a while and maybe try to knick the root here and there to see if I could trigger leaf growth.

Letcha know how things go. :-)

    Hi
There is a product called "Kieki grow" often used on Vandas to make them offset rather than continue to grow straight up. Might be woth a shot??
Several people on this forum say great things about it lol gary

Thanks for the product recommendation, Gary! Earlier I was wondering if a rooting hormone would help. I'll try to find some Kieki Grow. Maybe that would help your pet roots too? :-)

If I find the Kieki Grow ... I can send you some for your rooty guy.
