Staying in Florida and brought some of my orchids along. They have spent the last 7 months sitting on my daughters pool/patio area getting morning sun. Morning sun in Florida, is not morning sun in NY.

One plant is a noid, hard cane dendrobium which I kept for sentimental reasons. It never did much in NY, I'd get one spike of a few flowers each July.

A few months ago, the plant started taking off. Three new growths, loads of roots. I realized it was loving the extra sun, warmth and breezes.

It was in a clay pot. I picked it up to examine the plant and it slipped out of my hand crashing on the patio. My orchid supplies are not there (in storage) and I searched for something to stick it in. The only pot I could find was a ceramic pot, so I stuck the plant in with the spilled bark. I was sure the roots had been damaged by the fall.

The dend kept growing and sending up 3 spikes. I was amazed to get the spikes. I visit the plants every few days and give them all water.

Today, I decided to take the plant with me as the buds are ready to open. I brought it back, stuck it in the sink to water when I realized the pot had no drainage and the plant had been growing in a pot full of water. I had no idea!

Dumped the water, I'm leaving the plant alone as its about to flower and I still don't have a replacement pot. The roots are healthy, bright green and not the worse for wear!

I'm telling this story to make the point, if most growing conditions are met, a plant can handle almost anything.
