Limestone chippings

I've noticed a lot of growers here put limsetone chippings in the base of the pot. I'm not sure about this as most orchids (the principal exception being Paphs) do not like alkaline conditions. I've also noticed I tend to lose more plants that have this.

I have one with some limestone in the bottom and I have to get it out because it's suffering terribly. That being said, I do also use diatomite which is diatomacious(sp?) earth. I have heard from older members always to use granite chips. hope that helps. gb
