I would list a album or two of Dixieland, but I don't think that is quite down your alley.

Thanks! I also have a copy on my computer Brubeck's Time Out album, and I find "Take Five" a great number to cook along to.

The vinyl sides that I played to death as a teenager were Vol. III of the Columbia Bessie Smith Story -- Bessie with Joe Smith and the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra; Charles Mingus Blues and Roots; Side by Side -- Johnny Hodges and Sweets Edison with Duke Ellington; and Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Sing a Song of Basie.

I just returned from five days in southern California. Lots of driving along PCH with some fabulous road music blasting from the CD player. My top choice: The Mike Greensill Trio/Live at the Plush Room. Best. Road. Music. Ever.

It includes standards like "Girl of My Dreams" and "Better Than Anything" plus some original tunes including "A Dry Guy" and "Blues Noir."

I could fill up the rest of the GP bandwidth with my other favorites. They're all like my children -- I can't pick just one or two favorites.

I don't see many vocalists mentioned here. May I suggest:

Rene Marie
Rebecca Parris
Shirley Horn
Sheila Jordan
Wesla Whitfield
Madeline Eastman
Doris Day
Rosemary Clooney

Well of course I realize nearly everyone has heard of those last two. But they're d@mn good and merit being mentioned on any list of good jazz performers.

Thanks, Karen and Neil! I also like Ella Fitzgerald, and get a kick out of her younger, less trained voice on this recording:

Miles Davis and John Coltrane.......

For them what likes words with their jazz.

Joni Mitchell's cover of Annie Ross' Twisted.size>

I prefer Annie's version but the version on You-Tube isn't all that good.

Wicked lyrics, and all that...

Jazz vocals? How about Cleo Laine? And jazz musicians? How about John Dankwork. Together they made lots of great music.

I used to go to Ronnie Scott's Club in London in the late fifties to hear them play and lots of other jazz greats.

Try this on for size.

Found a better version of Annie doing her song. It's much better than Joni's.

There isn't any comparison between Annie Ross and Joni Mitchell as jazz singers. Joni Mitchell is not a jazz singer despite the fact she may sing songs associated with that art.

Nice to hear Annie. One of the best jazz singers ever. Up there with the finest.

I found Diane Schuur years ago and she does a mean rendition of "Take me to the water".

Sarah Vaughan. Stan Getz.

Ahmad Jamal at the Pershing

Diana Krall Live in Paris

Love Diane Shur! But don't forget the late, great Mabel Mercer.
