Orchid- severed root

I have a Phal, and it is blooming, and doing rather well. My question is this: One of the roots was very long, and sticking out of the pot. It became damaged, so I cut it off. The plant is fine, and the remaining part of the root has new growth. I put the severed peice onto a peice of driftwood in a tub with pebbles and water in it, and it seems to be quite a bit greener than it was, and devoloping gnodes. Is it possible to get a new plant from the severed root spike? If so, is it possible to get new plants by cutting root spikes off of existing ones, and would that damage the existing plant?
