I can't speak to your culture conditions for Coch. amazonica, but I can comment about water quality. It most likely depends upon where you are on LI. For me (I don't want to reveal the exact location here), my water is pretty clean. I use it for my orchids (100 or so). But I read my water quality report, so I know it's safe. You should be able to get it online (I do). In general, do you have hard water? do you use water softeners? How does it taste, look, affect your faucets (does it leave deposits or stains?)

Thank you. I live on the north shore of LI. I have read the safety reports and it is safe. Just was not sure about salts and minerals in the water. I don't use softeners.

I have two Cochleanthas, and they are very, very thirsty plants. From what I read, they do their growing in the warmer months and their blooming in the cooler months.

I have one I purchased in bloom over the winter about 2 or 3 months ago. I have it in full water culture. I have two new growths, nothing rotting.

Oh and it's in a south west window and I live in northern illinois :)
