Expert Advice Needed

I recently aquired two Phalaenopsis that were going to be thrown out because of their exceedingly poor condition. I believe that one was overwatered and the other underwatered. Since neither had blooms I went ahead unpotted them and trimmed back all of the dead roots and repotted them in a medium sized orchid bark. After repotting I watered with a 1/4 of the directed amount of Miracle Grow. Is there anything else that I need to do to help these wannabe beauties have a better chance?

Also, I have another Phalaenopsis that I had bought several months ago. It is in wonderful shape with a perfect arc and large two inch blooms. Shortly after I purchased it, it grew another spike out of the main and now it is a little miniature with two flowers of its own. The spike of the miniature is about 6 inches long. I've yet to find another Phal with the same markings and I'd love to cut the smaller spike and pot it separately. Is there any chance of success? If so, what are your suggestions?
