Does anyone have any tips for flowering this species? I have a large plant with plenty of green growth. I have tried increasing the feed, giving it some direct sun and witholding water. It's still cussed.
Your plant is not something I grow, but I was curious and found this site (URL below). If you haven't already seen it, there are a couple of brief but meaningful guidelines here that might be of interest.
I grow this one and sell it. It is a very robust plant that is almost constantly in bloom, 2 - 4 times per year. I grow it in full sun potted in sphagnum moss and keep it very moist. The one growing in the pond looks the best with lots of lush new growth and now just going into spike. I feed them with Dynamite time released fertilizer, don't use Osmocote in warm climates, mixed right into the mix. Once the stems have bloomed and fade, the plant will keiki up and down the spent cane. You can leave them on and they will bloom from those "branches" for the next bloom time, or they can be removed and potted up. These plants can form huge masses and get quite impressive. most are while with purple and yellow markings, or variations of thereof. It's a warm grower.
Dynamite and Nutricote are the same thing from the same company. It is also sold in bulk to nurseries as Floritan.
Osmocote is temperature released and that is why you do not use it in warm climates. It releases at about 70 degrees.
It is perfect for lawns in the northern states since it can be applied in the fall or early spring and only released when the weather is warm enough to use it.
It certainly could be used under 50 degrees since it will do nothing untiil it warms up.
Dynamite is the retail name and it is water released. Someone wanted you not to fertilize under 50 degrees and said not to use it, but I use it year round and my winters go under 50 every day. No problem with its use in cold temperatures.
I grow this plant indoor in the winter and put it outside in the summer. It went into spike in October and is in full bloom right now. It’s stunning and very fragrant. it needs full sun and really warm temps in the summer to bloom. Keep it wet and well fertilized all summer. It’s winter here now and I’m keeping it a bit drier.
