Ok,well now you cut the spike down to its base,remove it from its pot,trim all DEAD roots,leave the ones that are healthy and repot in a bark mix.do not fertilize until you see new root growth,water once weekly or when the medium seems dry,I personally don't use ice cubes,I use rain water and soak my plant until all the roots turn a bright green then I let it dry out and then water again.also keep it in bright shade no direct sunlight.your orchid seems to be a phalaenopsis.very rewarding with blooms and easy to take care of.oh and a pic would allow you to get more expert advice.velleta

I would like to suggest this- While cutting the dead roots, clean the blade in between cuts. Dip in rubbing alcohol and then dry. Otherwise you can transfer rot from one root to another.

Then, this is important- after cutting off rotted roots, dont water for at least a few days to a week. It helps the roots close up and heal so that they do not continue to rot. Otherwise you might end up with an orchid like mine ;-) my one-root wonder. Live and learn.

They really prefer room temperature water, not an ice cube.
I have seen those advertised with small phalenopsis I don't get it. They might need more than the amount of water contained in just one ice cube. Suggest you ignore that advice and water normally with fertilizer. In general, a phal
orchid might hold its bloom flush for months and months.
But sometimes, they don't last that long. The second blooming might be different. They sometimes rebloom in
the summer, depending on your conditions.
