Generally speaking, with exceptions, roots exhibit intelligence. They leave unfavorable conditions and strive to find favorable conditions.

Haha! Now you've got me stressed about my potting media.

Not to worry. The rest of the roots in the pot are digging in. Just these two decided to climb the mountain.

It is natural for some orchid roots to not go into the medium. They are air plants. This is what they do in nature. It would be more of a worry if some did not do that. Large translucent tips is a sign of good culture and good health. Good growing!

I am having trouble with a couple of my phals' new roots- they decided to start growing up as soon as they touched the media, i really need them to grow DOWN into it though. Neither of the two have many healthy roots down there right now. I wonder what you can do to encourage them to grow downwards?

Give them something to grow into that's sp incredibly wonderful that they can't stop themselves from diving head first into it.
