Divide and conquer. (Sometimes)

I 1/2 years ago I got a Dracula hybrid from Hawk Hills Orchids, Dracula Uschi (Quasimodo (gigas x bella) x robledorum). Compared to my other Dracula this one was not growing very fast. Against my better judgement I divided a not so big plant and grew the division in different conditions. The original plant stayed in the plastic basket in the middle of the GH, the division was mounted and placed on the edge where it gets more light.

The mother is still limping along with 8 old leaves and 2 new ones, no flowers. I have given it new moss and it gets the same water and fertilizer as the others. The division has 32 old leaves, 6 new ones and has 2 inflorescence, one just opened. I have no idea why 'Mom' is not happy but I'm glad I made the division.

If space is available I think all desirable, valuable plants should be divided in case something happens to one. The other is there for a backup. One step further is to give a division to a good grower with the promise to get back a piece if necessary. I actually did this with this plant and the recipient tells me that their piece is also limping along.

It does not always work out this way but looking at the gorgeous flower this morning I'm glad I did what I did over a year ago.
