Have you heard or tried vertical hugelkultur?

We had a record dry summer in Washington 2012. I believe it will be the norm. Drier climate is moving North.

My orchard is already berms and swales on contour, but I will be adding vertical logs to the berms.

I hit clay about a foot down. Can someone tell me how deep or long my logs should be?
