Phals can bloom for up to 20 months, see recent post. This means that new roots can come out when your phal is still blooming. Generally you don't need to upsize them much.

You wouldn't want to plant the phal deeper to accomodate the new roots. That would cause the lower roots to die and would probably cause the upper part of the plant to rot and die. Breaking off the roots is a bad thing and you want to repot when the new roots just break out on the plant. To late for this year, sorry.

Just leave it alone. Phals send roots out all over the place. They grow attached to trees naturally.

It's just what they do...totally normal.

They do eventually climb out of their pots. Looks nice and healthy for the time being. The roots can be amusing to look at. i don't see any new bud spike in the picture. Is that it just barely showing at the top?

i would definitely leave it, like jane says. the new roots that are growing out into the air are the best kind because they know how to get moisture out of the air without being surrounded by a wet spongy medium. it sounds and looks like you have a very healthy phal

A picture is worth a thousand word, so to put your mind at ease. This is my phal now it has decided that it will grow roots from everywhere possible. If you look closly on the pic you will see the roots grow through the holes I made in the pot too, this phal was in bloom for eighteen months and I removed the spike even though it had a few blooms remaining. Now phals like to grow roots all over the place and even if you place it lower in the pot it will just grow up and out if it pleases. As mentioned before its in their nature to grow that way, once your plant is healthy which seems to be the case let it be, just contine to provide good cultural and enjoy your plant, after it has finished blooming then you can repot in a pot that fit the root.:).
