Small oncodium like that will probably be Onc. Twinkle. Comes in a few different colors, most common being white. But there's no real telling for sure until it flowers:)Well done and congratulations!

If you were to use a new cup and put a couple of holes about 1/2" up the side from the bottom, it will hold a reservoir of water that will tend to keep it from drying out. This is what is known as semi-hydro. There is a company in PA that specializes in this method.

Thanks! I'm thinking it's a twinkle as well, but I'm curious to see if it's pink, yellow, or white. I'm hoping pink, as I already have a yellow phal. Someone told me this one was an easy one to get blooms on, I'm so glad!

Bob, that's exactly how the cup is configured: a few holes a short way up from the bottom. Unfortunately I cracked it a bit one day, so the cup sits in a small ceramic planter with a little bit of water in it. The roots don't reach that far down, so I'm not worried about rot. What I do notice is that the sides of the cup, and even some of the roots, get a film of green stuff. I don't know how I feel about mystery growth in there, but then, the plant is healthy, so why mess with it? The psuedobulbs are smooth and fat, and there are several more forming. It's clearly happy.

I still want to put it in a small basket or vented ceramic planter, because I like the look, and I think it will be easier to monitor and water that way. But it can wait! :)

The spike has finally reached the point where buds are forming ... I'm so impatient!!

Well, here's the final result. I'm pretty sure it's a Twinkle "Red Fantasy." I have heard a lot about oncidiums having a stronger fragrance in the evening (people say this about the Sharry Baby), but this one smells strongest in the morning! It's a teensy little plant, but there are three psuedobulbs that look ready, along with three new ones coming in; I'm hoping for multiple spikes in the spring!

Nice story, well presented. A saucer with 1/2" of water will do the same as an intact SH pot. The roots don't need to reach down there to get the benefit, the moisture seeps up the Lecca and you can water less. Healthy looking plant.

I have a large yellow one. Someone gave me a pink one last year, it just bloomed, also yellow! Now I got 2 yellow ones looking for a pink one.

Funny Nick, I was hoping THIS one was yellow! It's beautiful, and now it's identified, but I also have a Wilsonara Lisa's Delight 'Rayna' ... which has reddish-orange blooms, and a mini phal that's pink.

Maybe when this one gets big enough to divide, I'll be in touch about swapping a bit of your yellow oncidium for some of this guy! I keep it in that dish more for stability than anything else. The plastic cup, leca, and plant just don't weigh enough, and it would tip over constantly with the slightest touch or breeze.
