I think Bark might be fine in some growing conditions not so good in others.
To get good help you need to tell us where you are in the USA and give a brief description of your growing conditions.
I have gone back to bark plus some additions after Coco Chips proved to be not good in my conditions.

I live in WI, with many windows and plenty of good sunlight for the plants indoors. I have all pots atop a pan of rocks for added humidity. Currently the plants are in a S facing window. Temp somewhere between 65 and 75 degrees and humidity in the house is currently 50%.

I live in northern VT and have similar growing conditions to yours. My phals are in pure bark mix and do fine. Other orchids that need watering more often have some sphagnum moss on top of the bark to help retain water.
