Not familiar with cobbianum, but in general: Something for fine roots (fine bark mix, spagh, etc...) and lots of good quality water and light, in my experience. Some people have them sitting in trays of water, I have my two 'chilums outside currently and water every couple of days, they are in a fine orchiata bark mix.

I probably would have potted it after cleaning roots, but if you're letting it sit bare root, I'd say pot when you see new root growth.

Bob is on the money, I do not grow any Dendrochilum but my casual observation is that they are not potted in rocks around here, and the general rule about fine roots applies.

They are closely related to Coelogyne and probably need the same sort of mix (and conditions) Maybe you will find more info. related to WI if you look up Coelogyne.
