Been a farmer for the last 3 days. It has been so darn wet that the harvesting of both corn and soy beans are far behind the norm for this time of the year.

Son called Tues. night and said "Dad if you can would you give us a hand, Soapy and I are going to the west section , the west half of it should be O.K to pick. Would you go down by Ansley and start picking there?" Call Sarah and she will haul for you.

Was really happy to have something to do, unfortunately I had the old combine, the self leveling on the head doesn't work well and you have to watch little dips and hollows carefully while you are using it and adjust the head constantly by hand. Thats O.K., used to have to do that anyway on the old models.

Sarah managed to get the truck stuck before we even got one load unloaded. So, she got a ride back and came back with a tractor and 2 grain carts. We managed to get the truck pulled out with the tractor and just used to grain carts and tractor to haul with.

Managed to get all 160 acres in that field picked and hauled except for about a half acre in the middle, just too wet to even try.

Yield was very good, over 200 bu. to the acre. Son is storing corn in the hope price will advance. Fortunately he sold a good portion on the futures market well above what todays spot market is. In fact, it costs almost as much to raise a bushel of corn as what todays market price is.

Son and his help won't need me this week end, grandson is home from college and his hired woman and he can work all week end while the weather is good.

Son's 2 hired men were drivers for the mill and helped out on the farm too but they were in the National Guard and have been gone for several years. His hired gal has a CDL so she can haul for them too.

Rather tired, my own bed is going to feel quite good tonight, not sure that 82 year olds have the stamina to put in series of 15 hour days, guess I could get used to it though, but for now will just enjoy a day off.
