Question on decorative pots

Hi all, I went shopping today and decided to get some decorative pots for my phals. After reaching home I started thinking if it was a wise decision. So my question is, is it ok to use decorative pots for my phals? They are planted in the green plastic pots which I added more holes to for better drainage, I would leave them in the plastic, then place in the decorative pots.the decorative pots have drainage holes in the bottoms so I could just water and it ran through. They look so very plain in just the plastic pots and some of them are toppling over from being top heavy, would this hurt my phals being grown like that? The picture of the pots are included. Thanks again. VELLETA.

Generally you should be ok. If there are holes in the bottom, especially should be ok. If not, don't let water ever sit in te bottom.

So go ahead :) watch the moisture is the big issue.

Thanks turpgy, the blue one in the middle has a hole that goes into the bottom section and the plant only goes to the broad section so the entire bottom section is open and not accesable by the plant, the other two has drainage hole so the water runs right through. I have never used decorative pots so I was a bit hessitant about using them. But I always see people use them even when their plants were not in bloom and they make the plants look way more attractive.thank again I will be very observant where moisture is concern. VELLETA.

I think I would take them out of the decretive pot when the bloom was done. And if you had the time I'd remove them for an hour or so after I watered. To be on the safe side.

Thanks shavedmonkey, so can't the stay in the decorative pots, remove to water and then replaced? Or would this hurt them?VELLETA.

My best guess is over the long term the evaporation might not be enough. When they are not in bloom put them in a good grow spot but away from front and center.

I have a phal that came in a soft plastic liner pot with drainage, which was sitting in a ceramic decorative pot with NO holes. I take the inner plastic pot out once or twice a week, depending on the season, water it in the sink, and when it's done dripping, pop it back in the pot. It's been fine (it's in a chunky bark and charcoal mix), and is currently displaying a nice 11-bloom spike!

If my office environment wasn't so dry, I'd think about putting it in something with more air flow, but this orchid has really done well just as it is.

Particularly since you live in Jamaica, there will be enough heat to speed up evaporation from those pots.

Wow nice plal, well mine are in plastic with lots of hole and I drill holes in the decorative pots too so I think they will be fine, they are in a spagnum, husk, charcoal and perlite mix. I live in jmaica so its very hot here so I will just let them dry out before watering, and they can even be watered in the decorative pots thnks to my very handy drill. Thanks Danielle, seeing your phal makes me feel mch more confident and mine have lots of holes. LOL. VELLETA

Thanks terpguy, you read my mind I was jst thinking the same thing. As the saying goes " Brillant mind think alike.". :). VELLETA.

Yes, if they will drain freely, you can just water them in the pots! I like the clear plastic liner: you can see right away if something is going wrong. As you see here, I think this guy is ready for a slightly bigger home once the flowers are done, but the roots are looking great.

Really healthy roots. Here in jamica its relly difficult to get those pots I hve over twenty phals and only two are in clear pot. The green ones are the only one easily obtain. So I have to guess and watch my media. Anyways thanks very much for everyones help and I will jst watch and see what happens. Oh you have a VERY HEALTHY PHAL. Do you have any sugessions or tips and tricks which you use with them? I would love to know if you don't mind. Thnks again. VELLETA
