Wow! Summersunshine, This post is perfect timing! My Masd Tiger Bay just got through the mail today. I was wondering the same things because it's my first Masdevallia as well!
are the leaves thicker on yours?
I've heard that hybrids and thicker leafed plants are a little more forgiving with conditions...
and what kind of lighting conditions are in the fish room? :)

I grew them in NY with fair success. During winter, they stayed in a cool sunroom which was quite sunny during the day, but the temps would drop to the low 50's at night. During summer, they went outside under a large tree.

I found they liked more light than is believed and could tolerate warmer temps - not too warm! They like good air circulation and water when dry. They got the same humidity as my other plants, which was quite dry over winter.

I did use RO water, as bottled water can be high in minerals. Our tap water was well water and I could not use it on certain orchids.

We moved to Florida a year ago. They both died within 6 months despite my attempts to keep them cool. Truly hated this environment.

Nice pics, Jane NY! I hope that I can get mine to bloom too someday.

My plant doesn't seem to have particularly thick leaves but I know it is a hybrid (M. coccinea x M. infracta) so I am hoping that will be enough for it to survive here.
I have a western and southern exposure in this room so I have some good flexibility on how much light I can give it.

Tiger Bay looks really striking in some of the google images I saw of it. If you get blooms off that one be sure to post photos. :)

JaneNY, those are beautiful! I hope I can make mine look like that at least once...
Conditions for a lot of orchids are almost as varied as the individual cause there are so many darn exceptions to rules!
And I found a lengthy paper that seems honest about experiences with Masd.s, it's a word document.
