Cattleya Flower

I was given two cattleyas in the spring, a friend did some dividing of his plants, and one has flowered for me. The problem is it won't open. It's looked like this for almost two weeks. I've tried to pull back the (I don't know what you call them but the) 'petals' the flower came out of because it looked like it was keeping it shut. It seemed to have opened slightly more but why would this flower not open?

Sometimes they don't open properly. It could be a quirk or the characteristic of the plant. You won't know until subsequent blooms. I had a nice Catt with big purple flowers that would not open properly on 1st bloom. I decided to give it another year. The next year it again failed to open fully and I was ready to discard it.

The reason I did not is that the plant is growing in a hanging 3/4 coconut shell which I like to use for demonstration at society show talks. While I was contemplating pulling it out of there and replacing it with another plant, a year went be and it bloomed again. This time with perfect flowers! I'm glad I did not discard it, it's been a faithful bloomer ever since.
