nutrients for pond

i have a pond about 9x13 feet which has a small water sprout but no filter or other equipment.

each year the build up of algae is significant but it always clears up in a few weeks.

i have about 15 small gold fish which have survived the winter. However, i find they shrink in size which is not surprising considering they eat nothing for months. by the end of the summer, they are back to normal size. but they never really get any bigger.

i have been told that fish have dna which determines their size at birth and no matter what they are fed, if their parents were small, they will be too.

however, i have no way of knowing that is fact but i have been considering that perhaps my little pond is lacking some nutrient which is keeping them small. i feed them goldfish food and wheat germ when it is cold but that is the extent of my contribution. maybe i should feed them chocolate - makes me gain weight:)

would appreciate any suggestions, observations, ideas, etc.
