I'd say that is new growth on the catt, they usually bloom from the where the base of the leaves comes out of the p-bulb.
Hard to tell on the phal, but probably a root, it's pointing up like a new spike would, is why I'm not sure...

Either way: root, spike or new growth, it is a good sign.

I'll go along with Bob on the Catt- definitely new growth on the first plant. As for the Phal, I'd say that's a spike as it's green all over - roots look more "motley" - the tip will often be somewhat brownish while the base will be kind of silvery. And new roots are normally thicker.
What happened to the top leaf of the Phal?:)

Thanks Bob and Lena, I think the one on the Phal is more like a spike, will wait and see...some critters ate that new leaf when it was summer outside this summer-do not know who did that though.
