Boothbay, look up phal *type* dendrobium. It's not a Combination of the two. It is a Dendrobium with leaves and flowers that are somewhat reminiscent of a phalaenopsis.

Care: lots of light 5-6 hours of morning or evening sun during summer, south window durig winter). Allow to dry out between mornings.

If you treated it like a phal you won't get flowers this year. However they are going to bloom off of old canes as well as new growths, so if you give it good culture next year you could get a nice little show

Dendrobium a in general don't like a lot of water, with some exceptions. Dendrobium a will survive not being watered for 3 or 4 months and be fine. I don't have any phal types so I can't comment there. Think of that plant as being like a deciduous tree in winter, not dead, just not growing. That's what dendrobiums do.

Ashes, think about that comment for a second. You're recommending waterig the plant only 3 times a year. Cactus get watered more often than that....

During the winter ou might water it once every two weeks or so. But during the summer in good light you'll be watering it more than once a week.

I meant to not to be afraid of giving it a rest. It'll be fine as long as it's transitioned in. It depends on the dend. Latoureas don't rest but hard canes do. Watering also depends where you llive. This year Detroit had a cool summer so every 2 weeks was fine, last summer was super hot and they were put in the house and watered more

Sorry ashes but thats incorrect. Sections phalaenanthe (phal types) and spatulata (antelope types) are year round warm growing evergreens. This is likely a hybrid of these two sections.

Maybe a slight 3 week cool rest is fine. But not required. They are short day plants and bloom when light starts reducing. Everything rests a bit durig the winter but a full dormancy that you suggest can kill these warm growers. The section dendrobium are the main resters. This includes anosmum and parishii.

I've never rested any phal types and they grew and flowered very well.
